Fisk batted .417 in the 1975 ALCS, as Boston swept the three-time defending champion Oakland Athletics. Series not held in 1904 because the NL champions refused to participate, and in 1994 due to a players' strike. As Carbo approached third base on his home run trot, Carbo yelled out to former teammate Rose, "Hey, Pete, don't you wish you were that strong?" To which Rose replied, "This is fun." The Reds' only other run scored in the fourth when Joe Morgan walked, went to third on a Bench single, and scored on a Pérez force out.
Boston starter Bill Lee was again sharp, as he shut out the Reds through five innings. In the sixth, with Pete Rose on first base and one out, Johnny Bench hit a routine grounder that appeared would be an inning-ending double play. Shortstop Burleson fielded the grounder and under-handed the ball to Denny Doyle covering second base to force Rose out at second. But as Doyle pivoted to make a throw to first base, Rose slid high and hard into Doyle to force an errant throw that sailed into the Boston dugout preventing the double play as Bench moved onto second base. On a 1–0 count, Lee threw a blooper pitch to Tony Pérez who slammed the ball over the Green Monster and onto Lansdowne Street for a two-run home run, his third home run in the final three Series games, to draw the Reds to within 3–2.

As Fisk stepped to the plate to face Reds reliever Pat Darcy after midnight on October 22, he admitted that he didn’t have much of a scouting report on one of the Reds’ least known pitchers. Carlton Fisk waved his 12th-inning home run fair in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series, and the next night more than 75 million fans watched as the Reds defeated the Red Sox in Game 7. After the 1975 World Series, the Red Sox were in a financial dilemma. The Red Sox had to sign prospective free agents Lynn, Carlton Fisk, and Rick Burleson.
A telegram arrived at the Lenox Hotel on Boylston Street in Boston during the last week of the 1975 regular season. It was addressed to a guest, Dick Stockton, a 32-year-old broadcaster who was wrapping up his first season calling play-by-play for the Red Sox. In 2013, the win against the Cardinals in Game 6 marked the first time the Sox clinched a World Series at Fenway Park in 95 years, with John Lackey gaining a bit of redemption with 6⅔ innings of one-run ball in the 6-1 win. In 2007, Schilling delivered again with a Game 6 ALCS win, allowing just two runs over seven innings.

During spring training in 1986, the Yankees traded Baylor to the Boston Red Sox for designated hitter Mike Easler. On May 16, 1984, Fisk accomplished the rare feat of hitting for the cycle in Comiskey Park against the Kansas City Royals. Fisk's triple in the bottom of the seventh inning off Dan Quisenberry was the only triple he hit in the season. Injuries once again befell Fisk in the 1984 season, limiting him to just 102 games and a .231 average.

It was Cincinnati's third World Series appearance in six years, losing in 1970 to Baltimore and in 1972 to Oakland. It was the first of back-to-back championships for the Reds. For the Red Sox, the 1975 World Series was their first World Series appearance since losing to St. Louis in seven games in 1967. It would be 11 more years until Boston returned to the World Series in 1986, in which they suffered another seven-game loss, this time to the New York Mets. That left a lot of pent-up energy for the great players on both sides once Game 6 started.
During the regular season, Rice had hit .309 with 109 RBIs to finish third in the American League MVP race. More to the point, Tony Kubek, on the NBC telecast, immediately charged that Armbrister interfered , even though home plate umpire Barnett did not agree. Later, Kubek got 1,000 letters dubbing him a Boston stooge. Prior to Game 2 of the 1986 World Series, NBC did a feature on replays narrated by Bob Costas.

The replay is a useful angle showing exactly how much room was between Evans and the wall, but it will not be the best replay angle of the night. Six pitches in, the Reds have runners at first and second with nobody out, Bench and Perez coming to the plate, and Tiant still on the mound for the Red Sox. The broadcast booth is in universal agreement that Tiant hasn’t lost anything on his pitches, and the Reds have simply hit some good ones. Dick Drago is getting loose in the bullpen as Johnson goes to the mound, but again, he sticks with Tiant.
After Reds left fielder George Foster made the catch, Doyle tagged up and attempted to score the winning run. He was thrown out at home plate, which inadvertently helped set the stage for Fisk's subsequent game-winning home run. Fisk committed a throwing error on the play after colliding with Armbrister, which led to the Reds' winning run. Barnett declined to make an interference call on Armbrister, despite Boston's pleas. Barnett's failure to call an interference was criticized by NBC television broadcaster Curt Gowdy , who was particularly harsh in his comments, reputedly leading NBC to drop Gowdy from its baseball coverage.
The fans go nuts when Carbo comes to the plate again in the 10th . Fisk goes nuts when home plate umpire Satch Davidson says Rose was hit by a pitch in the 11th . The highlight for me was the broadcast announcement that “The Tonight Show” will not be seen due to the length of the game (but don’t worry, Tom Snyder’s show will air a half hour after the final out). Doyle led off the ninth with a walk, and with Fisk and Lynn due up, the Red Sox play for one run — which makes sense — and decide to sacrifice the second-best player in franchise history. I’m not saying it’s wrong, Stockton’s certain Yaz hasn’t bunted all year, and it’s something to see. After two fouls balls, though, he’s swinging away and lines a single that moves the winning run to third base with no outs.
This time he would be working with Garagiola and Kubek, the color man. Stockton would do play-by-play for the first 4 1/2 innings, beginning with the first pitch thrown by Boston starter Luis Tiant. With a possible Reds clincher on tap, NBC wanted Garagiola in place to call the last out of the World Series. They decided it would be a perfect place to put a camera.
In hindsight, it was easier to build St. Luke’s than it was to make that four-hour event. It took much more than Fisk’s home run to change televised sports forever. It took the conflation of happy accidents and huge personalities, including rain, money, Bowie Kuhn, Red Smith, Howard Cosell, rain, O.J.
Coyle, a former World War II bomber pilot, was 53 in 1975. He was a cigarette-smoking, gruff-talking, dese ’n’ dems kind of guy who walked in the swaying manner of John Wayne and was known to relieve himself between the production trucks during commercial breaks. Such a legend did he become that the broadcaster played by Bob Uecker in the 1989 baseball farce Major League was named Harry Doyle.
