Private investigator Mel Sattem (Adam Rothenberg) has been on the hunt for the truth about Ben's death, and not even the Byrdes manoeuvring to have him accepted back into the Chicago police force has stopped him. He figured out that Ben's ashes are in the goat-shaped cookie jar and broke into the house to find them.
The Byrdes tried to protect Ben as best they could from the murderous Helen, but Wendy inevitably gave up his location to Helen's hitman Nelson when she realized he could endanger the entire family. Jacob Snell ended up dying by Darlene's hand when his wife poisoned him with ground up cherry pits in his coffee. It was one of Ozark's most surprising deaths, made all the more surprising that the two still seemed very much in love and understanding of each other even after Jacob learned what Darlene had done. When Ruth proved unreliable in her efforts to get Marty Byrde's cash location, Russ and Boyd decide to go over to the Blue Cat lodge and kill Marty and skip town. Ruth ends up turning on her uncles and, in a character-defining moment, rigged a dock to electrocute both men when they arrived at the Blue Cat Lodge. After scrabbling around in the dirt for most of season 4, they have all of the money and donors they need to fuel their grand plans.

As Marty and Wendy stand with them, Camila warns the couple that she’d have their children killed and warns Ruth she’s coming for her. Shortly after, Omar tells Marty and Wendy that he knows his sister, Camila, was behind the attempt on his life, and he’s prepared to order a hit on her in retaliation. The Byrdes agree to help, in order to maintain the ruse.

Finally, we reach the moment first foreshadowed at the beginning of season 4, when the Byrdes are cruising home to the tune of Sam Cooke, only for a semi-truck to drift into oncoming traffic. Marty swerves to avoid the collision, and their car goes soaring, flipping multiple times until it comes to a smoldering, deadly still. Marty climbs out first, along with Jonah and then Charlotte, but Wendy is unresponsive. Chastened by this revelation, the kids go to visit their mother at the mental facility. Ben’s death seems to have hastened her downward mental spiral.We wanted his death to not have been for nothing in terms of the impact on not only Wendy, but Jonah and Ruth, too. It was really important for us to keep his [spirit] — and the pressure on Wendy — alive.
Darlene walked into the kitchen, and reappeared with a loaded shotgun and killed Frank before he even had a chance to react. It wasn’t a huge surprise to fans, though obviously Frank Sr. never saw it coming. Roy Petty was the first FBI agent charged with tracking the Byrde family as they carried out money laundering for the Navarro drug cartel. Petty sought to expose Marty and family's criminal activities, and resorted to whatever lengths it took in an effort to make that happen. As FBI characters later lament in Ozark, some of what he accomplished as head of the operation was outweighed by the numerous illegal activities he committed to achieve them. After some trouble with the heroin-dealing Snell family, Del was brought to a negotiation that Marty believed would be mutually beneficial for both sides.

When part 1 finished, the Byrdes were in a tight spot. That's quite the problem to deal with, and the issues just keep coming in part 2. The Ozark season 4 part 2 finale brought the story of the Byrde family and their dealings with the Navarro cartel to an end. Mel, the disgraced cop hellbent on proving the Byrdes killed Ben, was able to get his job back thanks to Marty and Wendy — as long he dropped his investigation into Ben’s disappearance. However, in the final episode he confronted the Missouri-based family with new evidence tied to Ben’s (Tom Pelphrey) murder. In response, Jonah approached him and fatally shoots him with a firearm.
